A SWEDISH MASTER OF THE CLASSICAL AND ELEVEN-STRING GUITAR
Life in Music
For more than five decades, Göran Söllscher has devoted his life to music, building an international career distinguished by artistic curiosity, musical integrity and a constant search for new repertoire, new collaborations and new audiences.
For more than four decades, Göran Söllscher has been recognised as one of the world's leading classical guitarists, admired for the elegance of his playing, the depth of his musical insight and an artistic voice that is unmistakably his own. Audiences around the world have been drawn not only to his extraordinary technique, but to his rare ability to reveal the poetry, humanity and quiet beauty within the music itself.
Rather than following trends, Göran Söllscher has always chosen his own artistic path. His repertoire spans more than five centuries, from Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces to Spanish music, Romantic works and contemporary compositions. Every performance reflects the same qualities that have defined his career: curiosity, integrity and a profound respect for the composer's intentions.
For decades, Göran Söllscher has been one of Deutsche Grammophon's most distinguished recording artists, creating a catalogue that has become an important part of the classical guitar repertoire. His recordings continue to inspire listeners across generations and today reach a global audience of well over half a million monthly listeners on Spotify.
One of the defining characteristics of his artistry has been his pioneering work with the eleven-string alto guitar. By embracing the instrument's expanded range, he has opened new musical possibilities while remaining faithful to the intimate and expressive sound that has always distinguished his playing.
Throughout his career he has appeared as soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras and has collaborated with internationally acclaimed conductors and musicians. His artistic partnerships have included violinist Gil Shaham, projects with Sir George Martin, the legendary producer of The Beatles, and performances with the acclaimed Chinese cellist Yang Wang, reflecting a lifelong openness to artistic dialogue while remaining deeply rooted in the classical tradition.
Spain has always occupied a special place in his musical life. His interpretations of Joaquín Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez are regarded among the finest of his generation. One of the most memorable moments of his career came in Madrid, where he performed the work in the presence of Rodrigo himself together with Her Majesty Queen Sofía of Spain—an occasion that symbolised the deep artistic connection between composer and interpreter.
Japan has likewise played an important role throughout his career, where he has returned regularly over many years and built a devoted audience. In recent years he has continued to strengthen his ties with Asia through concerts, festivals and artistic collaborations in China, further extending a musical journey that continues to evolve.
Concert life has always remained at the heart of Göran Söllscher's work. Alongside his international performing career, he served for many years as Professor of Guitar at the Malmö Academy of Music, where he inspired generations of young musicians. Following his retirement from the Academy, he has continued to share his experience as a visiting professor at the Royal College of Music in London and the Conservatorio Benedetto Marcello in Venice.
His artistic achievements have been recognised with numerous honours. He is the recipient of the Royal Swedish medal Litteris et Artibus and three Swedish Grammis Awards. In 2020 he became the first Swedish guitarist to be inducted into the Guitar Foundation of America Hall of Fame, receiving its prestigious Artistic Achievement Award in recognition of his outstanding international contribution to the art of the classical guitar.
The foundations of his international career were laid in 1978, when he won the Concours International de Guitare de Paris. The competition opened important doors, but it was only the beginning. The decades that followed—filled with recordings, concert tours, artistic collaborations, teaching and constant musical exploration—shaped the musician the world knows today.
Even today, Göran Söllscher continues to challenge himself in the simplest of ways. With nothing more than a mobile phone, he regularly records a musical piece in a single uninterrupted take—a personal discipline that keeps his musicianship alive while preserving the honesty and spontaneity of live performance. Many of these recordings are later shared with audiences through his YouTube channel.
Between concert tours, Göran Söllscher has always preferred the quiet rhythm of life in the Swedish countryside, where he continues to find inspiration in nature, reflection and music.
For Göran Söllscher, music has never been about recognition alone. It has been a lifelong journey of curiosity, beauty and communication.
His story is not one of a single triumph, but of a lifetime devoted to music.
